I use tools like five whys. Why are we seeing corrosion? Because the protective coating has degraded. Why has the coating degraded? Because the storage environment is humid. Why is it humid? Because the coastal facility doesn’t have climate control in that section. Why not? Because it was never included in the facility design.
But I don’t stop at the first thing I find. I ask: is humidity the real issue or just a contributing factor? 16. You’ve just received data showing that your supplier’s incoming inspection is finding far fewer defects than your receiving inspection. What does this mean and what do you do?
Sample Answer: “This is a red flag. Either their inspection isn’t rigorous enough, or our inspection is too tight and we’re rejecting good parts. Sample Answer: “I’d ask for data. Not promises, not testimonials from other companies. What specific quality metrics does this process improve? By how much? What’s the statistical confidence in those improvements?
Then I’d do a pilot. Run both the current process and the new process on the same product, with the same measurement system, and compare the results. I’d look not just at whether the new process is better, but how much better and whether the improvement is statistically significant or just noise.
Then I’d calculate the cost of poor quality for both approaches. If the new process reduces warranty claims by enough to offset the 20 percent cost increase, it’s worth it. If the improvement is marginal, it’s not. And I’d ask: could we achieve similar quality improvements with less costly changes? Maybe the real issue is training or maintenance, not the process itself.”
18. You discover that a critical supplier facility is using outdated testing equipment. What are your options and how would you prioritize them?
Sample Answer: “First, I’d assess the risk. Is the equipment still accurate? Just because it’s old doesn’t mean it’s bad. I’d have their equipment calibrated against a traceable standard and verify that it’s still providing accurate readings. If it is, then age alone isn’t a reason to replace it.
